The Drip

“But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:8-9, New International Version
"I am the LORD; in its time I will do this swiftly.”
Isaiah 60:22b, New International Version

This was actually the first song I wrote on the album. In our first Impart intensive, we had a bit of retreat time at a beach in Stanwell Tops. I found this little quiet spot, off to the side on a rock ledge. And right where I was sitting, there was this little drip that was constantly going. You could tell it had been going for a long time, because it had worn away the rock where it hit, and there was vegetation growing up in the channel where it ran down the rock. And what struck me suddenly I was that this drip, and the ocean, were the same thing - water - just in different forms, at a different scale. And I thought that a very similar thing can be true of God. There are times when he is like the ocean - infinitely powerful, and loving, and wild, and bigger than our comprehension. But there are other times when he acts more like the drip. I knew that there were places in my life where he had been slowly dripping away, changing and effecting me subtly, but permanently. God is both the ocean, and the drip. Sometimes we can only let him be the drip, and wonder why we don't feel his power in our lives - other times we only let him be the ocean, and find it hard to be close and personal with a God so vast and powerful. This song is about bringing them both together.

There’s a drip, from the Lord
Dripping away at my stone heart
And I know that this drip nourishes me
And helps me to grow

But there’s more to water than just a drip
Wind, take me to the place where I lose my grip

The Spirit calls me to the shore
Where I stand and see all my soul longs for
The ocean, so wide and deep is Your love
Your power is more than I dreamed of

Without the drip, I am lost at sea
Without the ocean, how can your power protect me
I’m too lost to not believe that both are You

The Spirit calls me to the shore
Where I stand and see all my soul longs for
The ocean, so wide and deep is Your love
Your power is more than I dreamed of
