About two thousand and twenty years ago, in a backwater town in Judah, among animals of the stable, a boy was born to a young carpenter and his newly-wed. The circumstances were the most humble - yet the baby was the most incredible that had ever graced the earth.
Everyone knows John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son; so that whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." The reason that the baby came into the world was love. But what was it that came into the world?
"In the beginning was the Word...Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it....The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world." John 1:1, 3-5, 9 NIV
Jesus came because of love. But he was the light - the true light, the light of all mankind, that shone in the darkness. That the darkness has not overcome, and will not overcome.
Christmas really is a time of light.
Merry Christmas to you all; may it be a time of love, light, and joy.
